Education at Center for Change
The Center's Education Program is comprised of three components:
- A High School Academic Program for adolescents grades 8 - 12
- An Adult Education Program which emphasizes vocational preparation and essential life skills
- A therapeutic Life Skills Curriculum which patients receive as part of treatment
High School Academic Program
The High School Academic Program is under the direction of the Center's Education Director and is staffed by a Principal and experienced, certified teachers. The Center's Cascade Mountain High School is a private school licensed by the State of Utah, and is working toward Northwest Accreditation. The school boasts creativity, individualized education planning, and a high degree of integration between clinical treatment and academic education. Adolescents are involved in inpatient and residential treatment for a sufficient amount of time to make significant academic progress while they progress towards recovery from their emotional and behavioral difficulties. During residential treatment, adolescent patients receive approximately five hours of daily academic instruction.
Adult Education Program
The Adult Education Program at the Center is for adults 18 and older. On occasion it will aid those who have yet to complete their high school graduation or GED. More routinely, however, it will aid young adults in understanding and pursuing their education and career goals, and will provide intensive training in adult life skills. This training includes parenting skills, relationship skills, interview skills, social and communication skills, resume building, word processing and computer skills, basic financial management, goal setting, self assessment and presentation, and the basics of emotional, spiritual, financial, social, and physical self care.
Life Skills Curriculum
The Life Skills Curriculum was written by experienced staff at Center for Change, under the direction of our Education Director, a PhD in instructional psychology. The curriculum includes content, didactic teaching, assignments, and experiential activities. It includes some of the following topics: Building Self-esteem, Developing Relationships, Spiritual Awareness, Overcoming Addiction, Parenting, Social-skills Training, Self-defense, Dating Skills, Assertiveness Training, Communication Skills, Understanding Sexuality and Intimacy, Relapse Prevention, and Decreasing Cognitive Distortions and Negative Feelings, etc. |
