About the Presenters:
Samantha Olson, LCMHC earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2011 and her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Westminster College in 2018. Samantha has worked in various mental health settings, from assisting in research projects at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland to conducting ABA therapy and group therapy with autistic kids in Salt Lake City. Samantha began working at Center for Change in 2014 and is extremely passionate about working with those who have eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and trauma. She is committed to advocating for her patients and customizing treatment to meet their current needs. Samantha works from an empowerment-based model, addressing feminist and multicultural issues with an ACT framework. Samantha is trained in EMDR for conducting trauma therapy and is Gottman Level-One trained for conducting couple’s therapy.
Haley Christensen, MEd, RD, CD is a registered dietitian specializing in eating disorder treatment, grounded in the principles of Health at Every Size® and Intuitive Eating. As the Lead Dietitian at Center for Change’s Salt Lake City campus, she manages meals, snacks, and other logistical components of the nutrition program for PHP and IOP levels of care. She also provides individual, evidence-based nutrition counseling and education for PHP, IOP, and outpatient clients. Haley holds a Master’s in Health Education and Promotion with an emphasis in Eating Disorder Treatment from Plymouth State University. She brings warmth, empathy, and a strong advocacy lens to her work, helping clients rebuild trust in their bodies while challenging diet culture.
Description of Presentation:
How to address negative body image symptoms or issues that a client may present in individual therapy or dietary sessions in a way that is trauma-informed. This includes using inclusive and trauma-sensitive language; utilizing HAES/neutral language; awareness around personal countertransference regarding bodies.
Learning Objectives:
Based on the content of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify and utilize trauma-informed language when addressing clients’ body image.
- Discuss Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
- Describe our own biases and how to make changes if needed.
- Identify self-care plans as trauma stewards.
- Describe how to coordinate properly with members of the client’s treatment team.
Training for:
Staff of Hospitals, Medical Centers, Mental Health Clinics, General Medicine Physicians, Psychiatrists, APRN’s, Psychologists, Counselors, Dietitians, Nurses, Substance Abuse Counselors, Mental Health Technicians for all levels including introductory to advanced
