Facing the Truth
Previously described as being Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED), is described as an eating or feeding disorder that will present significant distress, symptoms, or side affects similar to other commonly recognized eating disorders, but where full scale criteria isn’t met in diagnosis.
For example, a person diagnosed with OSFED may experience all the symptoms of anorexia nervosa, but may still have a normal menstrual cycle and/or body mass index. It also may include cases where a person is experiencing episodes of binging and purging, though not frequently enough to warrant a full diagnosis of bulimia nervosa.
These diagnoses are no less serious or absolute than any other eating disorder. People make a common mistake of not seeking help for OSFED and believe it to be something they can handle on their own. The truth is, these disorders can be signs of pre-mature diagnoses and can more often than not, take a turn for the worse to full diagnosis.
In cases like these the problem may be worsened by a person not seeking help after a pre-mature diagnosis. Behaviors become so engrained that help becomes even more difficult to ask for and can lead to death or other serious health conditions more commonly found in eating disorders.
