Center For Change Compulsive Eating Program Can Provide Support Through the Holidays
November 13, 1998, Orem, Utah-Compulsive eating disorders are most pronounced during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and require special attention, according to Dr. Paul Harper, Ph.D., education director for the Orem-based Center for Change. To assist those who suffer from compulsive overeating, the Center for Change is sponsoring a 16-week course aimed at helping people overcome the root cause of their disorder and its unpleasant and sometimes dangerous consequences.
"The holiday season is a challenging time for thousands of Utah residents," said Dr. Harper. "The pressures of increased time constraints, financial needs, activity levels, and social demands, send many people in search of comfort and relief. For some, that relief comes in the form of compulsively eating increased amounts of food."
According to Dr. Harper, the course will cover nutritional topics, but will focus more particularly on identifying and overcoming the psychological and emotional barriers to establishing a normal, healthy relationship with food. The intent of the course is to give individuals the tools they need to overcome compulsive eating problems for the rest of their lives.
"Yo-yo dieting and calorie counting are only attempts to treat the symptoms of compulsive eating disorders, and can be very harmful to the body," said Harper. "This course has nothing to do with dieting and everything to do with helping people understand why they are compelled by this addiction to do what they do. Weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of this understanding."

The course will begin Saturday, November 14 and continue for 16 weeks. Class times are Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m. For more information about the course, call Dr. Harper at (801) 224-8255.
