Hi all,
I'm writing this post because i am worried about my dad. He started losing weight for health reasons and, as usually happens in our family, he has taken it to the EXTREME. He and I (my paternal grandma did this too)tend to get on "jags". I guess you would say it's OCD.
Anyway, my dad has recently lost A LOT of weight. He says around 30 lbs. This all occurred after he lost his job. He has not been able to find a new one, but has some leads. His depression has been terrible. To make a long story short, he's started, a while back... to make comments to me like "I can't eat that, it has butter on it" or vice versa. The other day we got these things that were whatever cals a piece and he said "Oh good, I can eat up to three of them", like that's all he was going to eat that day. I've watched him. All he eats is a bowl of oatmeal in the morning and dinner at night. He likes to say "Oh, all I've had today is a couple of pretzels". My mom took a picture of him to my therapist and she says that his face (it was a face shot) looked "too thin". I agree.
What shall I do? what do I say?

Sounds like it is more than OCD at this point. I think when a man looses his job, he also looses his self-esteem. Especially if he is having a hard time finding something else. Perhaps you and your mom can encourage him to seek therapy, just someone for him to talk to, to build himself up again as a man in transition in his life. As you know, there is nothing about any of this that really is about food. But, it comes down to how we feel inside. It must be very scarey for him to be at this point in his life. Men want to take care of their families and they do have their pride! I would for sure encourage him to seek help, even if it's from a spiritual leader, an employment counselor or therapist. I wish your family well!! Hang in there
